Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are tiny titanium screws that are surgically implanted into your jaw, where they function as artificial tooth roots. Because your body doesn’t recognize titanium as a foreign substance, your jawbone actually fuses to the implant as it heals. This creates a strong and sturdy foundation on top of which Dr. Parish can place a restoration.

What restorations work with dental implants?

Dr. Parish can fit your dental implants with a wide range of restorations, including:

Crowns

A single crown affixed to a single dental implant has the highest success rate of implant-based restoration and is as close as you can get to just regrowing your natural tooth.

Bridges

Implants allow you to use a bridge to replace multiple teeth without having to shave down any enamel from the adjacent teeth. If you’re missing three teeth in a row, Dr. Parish can place two implants on either side of the center gap, and attach a bridge that covers all three teeth spaces.

Dentures

You can replace an entire arch of teeth with as few as four implants. Implant-supported dentures work with both fixed and removable dentures, and are much more comfortable and sturdy than traditional adhesive- and suction-supported dentures.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

As a tooth replacement solution, dental implants offer a number of benefits, such as:

  • Don’t require the removal of enamel from neighboring teeth (unlike bridges)
  • Don’t slip around in your mouth (unlike dentures)
  • Can be cleaned like your natural teeth
  • Feel, function, and look just like natural teeth

Dental implants also protect you against the negative effects of missing teeth, such as bone loss in your jaw and the shifting of the rest of your natural teeth.

How do I get dental implants?

Before Dr. Parish can give you an implant restoration, you need to have your implants placed by an oral surgeon or periodontist.

Your specialist numbs your mouth, makes a small incision in your gum, drills a hole in your jawbone, and places your implant in the hole. They fit you with a healing cap to wear while your jawbone heals and fuses with the implant over the next few months.

After your implant fully heals and fuses with your jawbone, Dr. Parish takes an impression of your mouth that he sends off to a lab that designs your crown, bridge, or dentures to fit snugly over the implant and comfortably in your mouth.
