Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a revolutionary orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth and aligns your bite with a series of clear aligners.

Unlike traditional metal braces, which align your teeth with a series of uncomfortable and noticeable metal brackets and wires, Invisalign’s clear aligners are made from smooth and flexible polyurethane plastic, allowing you to upgrade your smile with a comfortable and discreet treatment.

How does Invisalign work?

Your Invisalign aligners are made from an impression that Dr. Parish takes of your smile. That impression is fed into computer software, which generates a virtual model of your smile. Dr. Parish and the Invisalign lab manipulate that virtual smile to create your target alignment and then map out a series of alignment phases in between that target alignment and your current alignment.

Each one of those alignment phases is turned into a set of two clear plastic aligners: one for your upper teeth, and one for your bottom teeth. Your aligners fit snugly over your teeth, where you wear them every day for at least 22 hours per day. When they’re on your smile, your aligners exert a small amount of pressure that gradually moves your teeth closer to your target alignment.

You wear each set of aligners in your series for two weeks before moving on to the next set. By the end of your series, your smile will be straighter, more healthy, and beautiful.

What conditions can Invisalign treat?

Invisalign treats many of the same conditions that braces treat, such as:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Widely spaced teeth
  • Open bite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Overbite

If you’re curious about whether your orthodontic condition can be treated with Invisalign, schedule a consultation with Dr. Parish today.

Am I a candidate for Invisalign?

Every orthodontic case is unique. Dr. Parish treats a variety of cases including crowded, turned or twisted teeth, and too much space between teeth. Some difficult cases are better treated by an orthodontist. If your case is in this category, your dentist will give you a referral for an excellent orthodontist.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Orthodontic treatments, in general, have a number of benefits. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, keep the force in your bite more evenly distributed across your jaw, and are more cosmetically appealing.

Invisalign has a number of advantages, however, that make it stand out from other orthodontic treatments, like traditional metal braces. Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign’s clear aligners are:

Convenient

Invisalign’s removable aligners allow you to clean your teeth just like you normally would, without special tools or techniques

Discreet

Invisalign’s clear aligners are virtually invisible when you’re wearing them, unlike the “metal mouth” look that you get with braces

Comfortable

The aligners’ smooth plastic is comfortable in your mouth, and won’t tear up the insides of your cheeks as metal braces do
