Crowns Q & A

What is a crown?

A crown is an artificial tooth cap. Unlike a veneer, which replaces or covers up the front-facing portion of your tooth, a crown covers your entire tooth above the gumline.

A crown is shaped just like the natural tooth that it replaces, leaving it to feel and function just like the rest of your natural tooth. Once your crown is in place, you won’t even feel like you have an artificial tooth.

What does a crown do?

Crowns from Dr. Parish and his team serve a wide range of purposes, like:

  • Restoring a tooth that’s suffered significant decay
  • Fixing a misshapen tooth
  • Strengthening a damaged tooth
  • Capping off a dental implant

Depending on the material used, a crown can also serve a cosmetic function by replacing an unsightly tooth.

What is a crown made out of?

There are a few different types of materials that crowns are made from at Dr. Parish’s office, all of which have different advantages. Some of the more common materials are:

Porcelain

Porcelain crowns are incredibly popular for their natural-looking appearance. The porcelain material has a very similar color and translucency as your natural tooth enamel, making them an excellent choice for capping off your visible teeth.

Porcelain with zirconia

Porcelain crowns with zirconia have all of the aesthetic advantages of porcelain crowns, but with an added element of strength and durability. This material is actually the strongest of the ceramic class.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have a metal interior that’s covered in a porcelain shell. The metal interior provides a great deal of strength and biting force, while the porcelain shell provides cosmetic appeal.

Cast gold

Cast gold is the strongest and longest-lasting material for crowns, but they’re not as cosmetically appealing, making them a more popular choice for molars and teeth that aren’t as visible in your smile.

When you come in for your crown, Dr. Parish works with you to determine the best material for your needs, preferences, and budget.

How do I get a crown?

Dr. Parish fits you with your crown in just a few office visits.

During your first visit, he anesthetizes your mouth and shapes the tooth to be crowned. He then takes an impression of your smile with a dental putty or an intraoral camera. Dr. Parish custom makes a temporary crown to wear while the lab fabricates your permanent crown. This should take a week or so.

You come back to the office when your permanent crown is ready. Dr. Parish removes your temporary crown, cleans your mouth, and places the permanent one. He checks that the bite and fit are accurate and comfortable, and seals your crown in place with dental cement.

You leave his office with a brand new tooth that improves the feel, function, and look of your smile.
